The first Friday of every month = Walk or Wheel
Students are encouraged to walk, bike, or wheel to school on the first Friday of each month and every Friday in April to celebrate Earth Month.
Live too far? Carpool with friends and use the park-and-walk spots indicated on this map near school.
The grade with the highest participation each month keeps the Walk or Wheel Trophy 🏆 until the next month!
Check in at the Walk or Wheel table when you arrive to check in a get a special treat!
Before participating in the event, we encourage you to share a few safety rules from below with your child.
Safety tips for walking:
Walk on the sidewalk
Cross the street at the crosswalk and do so carefully
Walk with a buddy
Safety tips for biking, scootering, etc:
Check your bike before you go out - Take it for a test drive to make sure it is working properly.
Wear your helmet properly - Wearing a helmet is required by law and for good reason. It keeps your head and brain safe. Where would we be without our brains? Your helmet should be level on your head - it shouldn’t sit way back and it shouldn’t tilt way forward - it should be level. And the chin strap should fit comfortably. The side straps should form a V.
Ride at a pace that feels comfortable and safe for you - If you don’t feel safe, slow down. You can always walk your bike, too.
Concentrate on riding in a straight line - so your movements are predictable for those around you.
Look out for hazards on your path - potholes or broken glass can cause damage; practice carefully navigating around them.
Know the rules of the road.
STOP at stop signs.
WALK your bike in the crosswalk.
When crossing road, STOP, then look LEFT and RIGHT before crossing
At school, you can ride on the sidewalk; be very careful of cars backing up and be courteous to people on the sidewalk.
Practice your hand signals - Three signals help let others on the road know what you are planning to do:
Left. if you are turning left.
Right. If you are turning right.
And Stop. If you are planning to stop.
